Leighton pupils are cyber savvy

Cyber savvy students at Leighton Middle School came second in both categories of an annual competition organised by the Bedford branch of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

More than 200 Year 7 and 8 pupils across the county took part.

Year 7’s topic was online safety. They were asked to create an educational resource that promotes the positive aspect of online talking and messaging but also helps people understand when online behaviour can become inappropriate and risky.

Leighton Middle’s team of Anuradha Krishnan and Weronika Wasilewska took second place with their informative animation.

Year 8s were tasked with producing an identity theft game to help people understand what it is and why it’s important to guard against it.

The school’s trio of Joseph Hannigan, Freddie Goodyer and James Aldous replicated their fellow students’ second place with a gamer who had to work through a series of different scenarios to protect his identity.

BCS Bedford branch chair Dr Ip-Shing Fan said: “The aim of this competition is to help get children interested in computer science and encourage them to use computers creatively.”
Bedfordshire Police Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said: “Initiatives like this are absolutely vital in educating young people about computer science and the risks associated with the cyber world. It could well inspire the police digital investigators of the future.”
